Most of us remembered the endless summer of 1976 and enjoyed the references to the food and way of life. Some very good descriptive writing but perhaps overdone - was the author trying too hard? Time shifting was confusing the abundance of characters added to the confusion. The perspective of the two girls added to the enjoyment of the book - Tilly the voice of reason and Gracie the follower. The book brought out "keeping up appearances, hypochricisy and predjudice very well. but it's very truthfulness made the book rather depressing. Some thought the book to be well structured and the hot summer added to tension. The trouble with goats & sheep is that our dividing of people into good or bad may be very wide of the mark when all truth comes into the light. The search for God motive didn't seem to hang together, although it is meant to be a metaphor for the search for truth.
